Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about hosting, attending, and being part of Knock.

For Neighbours

A Knock is a small group session hosted in someone’s home. A host shares something they love — baking, sign making, punch needle, card games, gardening — and opens their door to a small group of neighbours. Sessions are typically 2–3 hours with 3–8 people. You do not need any experience. You just need to show up.
Most hosts provide all materials and supplies. Check the session description for details — some hosts will note if you should bring anything specific. Otherwise, just bring yourself.
Payment depends on how the host has set up their session. Some sessions collect payment at the door (cash or e-transfer). Some request e-transfer before the session. When we launch credit card payments, you will be able to pay online at the time of booking. Free sessions are also available — no payment needed at all.
You can cancel any booking more than 48 hours before the session for a full refund. Within 48 hours of the session, cancellations are accepted but no refund is issued. Your spot reopens automatically for someone else.
We take safety seriously. Every host is personally reviewed before they can publish. Your address is only revealed 48 hours before the session. Sessions have a minimum of 3 people. Both hosts and neighbours review each other. And all communication stays inside the platform. Read more on our Safety page.
That is the whole point. Everyone at the table was a stranger once. The host’s job is to make you feel welcome from the moment you walk in. Most neighbours tell us the nervousness disappears within the first ten minutes. If it helps, you can bring a friend — just book two spots.
You can browse all sessions and read about hosts without an account. You only need to sign up when you are ready to book a spot. It takes about 30 seconds.

For Hosts

Right now, during our beta period, there are no platform fees. We are focused on building the community and getting feedback. When we introduce fees, they will be a small percentage of the session price — so you only pay when you earn. We will give plenty of notice before any fees are introduced. Free sessions will always remain free to host.
Anything you love and want to share. Baking, crafts, painting, card games, gardening, music, book clubs — if you can do it at your kitchen table or in your living room, it is a Knock. You do not need to be an expert. You just need to enjoy sharing what you know. Browse our five categories for inspiration: Making & Creating, Food & Kitchen, Games & Gathering, Music & Expression, and Home & Outdoors.
Absolutely not. You need a table and a willingness to open your door. Some of the best Knocks happen in the most ordinary kitchens. Your home does not need to be Instagram-ready. It needs to be yours.
You choose your own price when you create a session. Consider your supply costs and your time. Most sessions range from $20 to $50 per person. You can also host free sessions — we give every new host three free sessions to get started.
You have the right to cancel any booking before the session, for any reason, with a full refund to the neighbour. No rating impact. No questions asked. Your home is your space — you decide who enters it.
We recommend checking with your home insurance provider to confirm your policy covers small social gatherings. Most standard homeowner policies do. Knock does not currently provide event insurance, but we are exploring options for the future.
Sessions require a minimum of 3 neighbours and a maximum of 8. You set your own maximum within that range based on your space and comfort level.

About Knock

Knock was built by Kim Desveaux — a neighbour; a mom; a Nova Scotia entrepreneur with a BBA, MBA in Community Economic Development, and Full Stack Web Developer certification from the University of Toronto. Kim built Knock because she loves to make things, to share her hobbies and have tea with friends. Then, only after reading peer-reviewed studies on loneliness, friendship formation, and community building did she start to build with intention. Learn more on our About page.
Knock is just getting started. We launched in Nova Scotia and are growing one neighbourhood at a time. If there are no sessions near you yet, let us know where you are — we will reach out when Knock arrives in your area. Tell us where you are →
Knock is exclusively for sessions in personal homes. Not studios, not community centres, not commercial kitchens. Someone’s actual home, someone’s actual table. That intimacy — the trust of opening your door and the courage of walking through it — is what makes Knock different. Small groups, real connection, your neighbourhood.
